Forest Edge Studio Residence

Project type

Woodland Studio

Date

Begun March 2026

Location

Camano Island, WA

Set within a large property on Camano Island, this project centers on the landscape surrounding a detached residence. With water views to the front and woodland at the rear, the site is being developed in phases.

The landscape design approach begins with structure. Rather than treating the landscape as a backdrop, the goal is to shape a cohesive environment where building and site feel intentionally connected. Circulation, outdoor rooms, and thresholds between interior and exterior spaces are carefully considered to support both daily use and long-term evolution.

Planting follows as a layered system, informed by the woodland context and the site’s specific soil and light conditions. The intent is to incorporate native plants characteristic of Pacific Northwest woodland environments while shaping a naturalistic garden that remains composed and intentional—restful, intimate, and clearly structured rather than diffuse.

As the project progresses, the landscape is evolving as a study in small-scale living paired with a larger site—where simplicity in the built space is balanced by richness and depth in the surrounding environment.
