    Known for adventurous plant selections, including rare perennials, shrubs, and trees. A destination nursery worth the drive and also does mail order.

  • K. van Bourgondien / DutchBulbs — Mail Order / International
    A long-established Dutch bulb and perennial supplier, offering a wide selection of bulbs (tulips, daffodils, lilies, alliums) via mail order.

  • Van Engelen — Mail Order
    Mail-order bulb supplier with a wide selection of perennials, bulbs, and specialty varieties.

Gardens to Visit

The Seattle area boasts many gardens of many different types, many with views of the mountains or water (or both!). If you ever want a field trip, these gardens are among my favorites to walk through, learn from, and simply enjoy. 

​

A serene 150-acre forest reserve blending moss gardens, meadows, reflection pools, and Japanese influence.

​

​       A park with amazing views of the Olympic Mountains, a creek with salmon spawning. 

​

  • Center for Urban Horticulture — Seattle, WA
    A living laboratory of garden transitions, from cultivated displays to natural areas, plus the Union Bay Natural Area and specialty gardens.

​

160 acres of park with views of the Olympics and Cascade mountain ranges and a lighthouse. 

​

​Another Olmstead Garden Design, this 7.5 acres of a public garden is a nice blend of natives and ornamentals.

​

       84 acres of beach and trails with some of the best sunsets in the city. 

​

Rare and imaginative plant collections in a restored woodland setting, originally created by Dan Hinkley and Robert Jones.

20-acre Japanese-inspired garden with ponds, waterfalls, terraces, and maples, developed by Fujitaro Kubota.

 

Experience an enchanting botanical collection in a Pacific Northwest forest filled with colorful, rare, and interesting plants from all over the world.

  • Seattle Japanese Garden — Seattle, WA
    A 3.5-acre classical Japanese stroll garden, blending water, stone, bridges, and seasonal plantings.

​

Newly redeveloped urban green space with playgrounds, seating, plantings, and design inspiration along the waterfront.

​

Another historical Olmstead Park, located on an isthmus in South Seattle, near Columbia City. Old growth, lakeshore, swimming beaches too if you want to cool down in the summer. 

​

  • Volunteer Park Conservatory — Seattle, WA
    A historic Victorian glasshouse with display houses for ferns, palms, succulents, and tropical plants.

​

One of the original Olmstead Parks, this gorgeous Capital Hill landscape is a mature park with sweeping view of the city.

​

230 acres of collections including Azalea Way, Rhododendron Glen, and woodland gardens. Managed by UW Botanic Gardens.
