Creekside Urban Garden | Seattle, WA
Project type
Residential Landscape
Date
March 2024
Location
Seattle, WA
Located along an urban creek, this landscape is being restructured to move away from lawn toward a more layered and site-responsive planting strategy.
The front garden is being reworked with a Northwest–Japanese influence, using a restrained palette and simplified structure to create a calm, intentional entry sequence. The design emphasizes form, texture, and spatial clarity, providing year-round presence in a highly visible space.
In contrast, the rear garden shifts to a fully native planting approach, responding directly to the adjacent creek corridor. Here, planting is designed to support pollinators and habitat, with lawn areas gradually being replaced by native grasses and meadow planting, including the development of a Garry oak meadow.
The result is a landscape that balances clarity and ecology—structured at the front, more habitat-driven at the rear—while evolving over time as the planting matures.
